What Is an Expansion Tank?

An expansion tank is a small tank (usually 2-5 gallons) installed on the cold water supply line above your water heater. It absorbs the extra water volume created when water is heated (thermal expansion).

Why Do You Need One?

When water is heated from 50°F to 120°F, it expands by about 2%. In a 50-gallon tank, that's an extra gallon of water. This expanded water needs somewhere to go.

Open System (No Backflow Preventer)

Expanded water pushes back into the city water main. No expansion tank needed.

Closed System (With Backflow Preventer or Check Valve)

Many NYC buildings have backflow preventers or pressure-reducing valves that create a "closed system." The expanded water has nowhere to go, causing pressure spikes that can:

• Damage the T&P relief valve (causing dripping)
• Stress pipe joints and connections
• Reduce water heater lifespan
• In extreme cases, cause tank failure

Signs You Need an Expansion Tank

• T&P relief valve drips periodically
• Faucets have sudden pressure surges
• Water hammer when appliances shut off
• You have a backflow preventer or PRV installed

NYC Code Requirements

NYC Plumbing Code requires an expansion tank when a closed system exists. If your building has a backflow preventer (common in newer buildings and renovations), an expansion tank is mandatory.

• Location: Cold water line above water heater
