Decoding Water Heater Noises

Popping / Crackling

Cause: Sediment buildup at the bottom of the tank. Water trapped under sediment heats up and creates steam bubbles that pop through the layer.

Severity: Moderate. If ignored, reduces efficiency and can lead to tank failure.

Fix: Tank flushing ($100-$200). If severe, may need professional descaling.

Rumbling

Cause: Similar to popping but more severe. Heavy sediment buildup causing large volumes of steam.

Severity: High. The tank is working much harder than it should.

Fix: Professional tank flush. If the unit is old, consider replacement.

Banging / Water Hammer

Cause: Water hammer occurs when water flow is suddenly stopped, causing pipes to bang. Can also be caused by thermal expansion in a closed system.

Ticking

Cause: Usually heat trap nipples on top of the water heater. These are normal and designed to prevent heat loss.
